Welcome to the ELI
In recent years the status of English Language changed in the world as it became the lingua franca of communication. In Sudan despite the wide policy of Arabization, English language still plays an important role in the development of the country. Thus there is a strong demand for learning of English especially among university graduates.
The English Language Institute was established in the year 2011 by the University of Khartoum Council. Since then the ELI strived to promote the learning of English language by establishing one of the first Self-access centres in the country. The SAC has very limited resources but has great impact both on learning and research. Expanding the Self-access centre is one of the priorities of the ELI so as to foster autonomous learning among students.
The mission of the ELI is to work towards improving the delivery of English Language training and research services at the University of Khartoum and Sudan as a whole. The ELI currently runs a number of very popular courses and programmes to cater for the public demands. Recently the ELI launched two postgraduate programmes, a master and a diploma.
The ELI is planning to offer a number of certificates and a PhD programme all designed to meet the growing needs for professional certifications and for more PhD holders. Also the ELI plans to continue to offer its training services to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the National Training Council, two of the ELI biggest clients, and to be able to sustain its activities in promoting English language in Sudan.
