The English Language Institute (ELI) was established in 2010 with the mission of working towards improving the delivery of English Language training and research services in Sudan. The ELI is to teach extensive English language courses through a broad curriculum that provides an optimal learning environment, and equips undergraduate and postgraduate students with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their academic, professional and social settings.

Ministry of Higher Education English Language Course offered by Training and Testing Unit

Course type: Short courses

Course Code: MHEng

Duration: Two levels continue for 80 hours plus 20 hours of English Club.

Target groups: University staff

Aims

The aim of these courses is to raise the proficiency level of the candidates from an A2 level to a B2. The courses uses Link UP book series (Pre-intermediate/Intermediate), which consists of 20 units each. Each unit is divided into a number of links that cover reading, vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking and writing.Levels are set by Institute. Candidates must study two levels to be awarded a certificate from the Institute.

 IELTS offered by Training and Testing Unit

Course Code: IELTS

This course offers training to university graduates who want to sit for and maximize their score on the International English Language Tests (IELTS). The duration of the course is one month (2 hours per session, 3 times a week). The course aims to increase vocabulary, revise important grammar and provide tips and techniques to boost participants IELTS score. The ELI offer their support to the candidates after the course ends.

TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) Preparation courseoffered by Training and Testing Unit

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Preparation course is offered by the ELI for those who want to take the TKT qualification. The course is 36 hours and is delivered by certified British Council TKT trainers. Materials prepared by University of Cambridge and British Council are used in the preparation course.

Academic Writing offered by Training and Testing Unit

The academic writing course is intended for postgraduate students. The course duration is 36 hours; 6 hours a week. The aims of the course are to improve writing skills,use of punctuation marks, writing of correct lists of references, citing of references, use of functions of academic language by participants. The course covers a wide range of writing skills starting from the paragraph up to essay writing. Grammar topics related to writing are also covered in this course. The course aims at improving the learners ability to write good paragraphs and essays, The course is open to participants from all fields of study who are currently working on a PhD thesis, a research master’s, an article for publication or any other academic writing project in English. The language of instruction is English. Participants are expected to have English language skills at level B2+ or higher in terms

ELI also fosters the learning of English language through various programs scheduled on demand to serve Sudanese community. The staff working for the ELI are highly qualified and competent with more than 10 years of experience in English language teaching.

This is a two levels course with a total of 64 contact hours. The main aim of the course is enhance the candidates speaking and listening skills. The staring level of the students is elementary. This course is taught by native speakers or near native speakers.

Certificate of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (CTEFL) offered Graduate Studies Unit

The Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (CTEFL) is for Sudanese Teachers who have little or no previous English language teaching experience, and wish to update or refresh their knowledge.

  • Certificate Aims:

This programme primarily aims at enhancing teachers professional skills. In addition, the certificate aims to enable candidates to:

  1. reach a B2* level of language proficiency
  2. raise their awareness of the English language structure, sound system, morphology, and syntax.
  3. apply innovative and different approaches to teaching English language skills.
  4. acquire essential knowledge of the language, language learning, methodology, and familiarity with the principles of effective teaching.

3. Diploma in English for Academic Purposes (DEAP)

  •  Introduction

The ELI Diploma in English for Academic Purposes (DEAP) is an intensive English language, study and research skills diploma taught over two semesters. The diploma combines a comprehensive study of the English language skills, and a detailed practical study of the skills necessary for academic work and research. The Diploma course offers a full-time programmespecifically designed to meet the needs of students who wish to prepare for entry onto postgraduate degree programmes or conducting research. The Diploma course helps students to extend and develop their language, study and research skills.

The Diploma in English for Academic Purposes (DEAP) is for Sudanese graduates who want to improve their English language, and wish to use English for academic purposes.

2. Aims:

This programme primarily aims at enhancing student’s four language general skills. In addition, the DEAP aims to:

  • promote learners’ language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
  • enhance the learners academic skills
  • equip the learners with various research skills.

3. Learning Outcomes

           All these training courses utilize face to face instruction in addition to online tools with a greater emphasis on continuous practice. Audio- visual materials are also used in teaching. We provide all the necessary needs for each training course such as books, tapes, handouts and activity books.

          Upon the completion of any training course, learners are awarded a completion certificate. The certificate can be authenticated by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affaires.
